Countdown

4 more days in London. Today I will have to prepare for the movers that are coming tomorrow. This means packing my suitcases for the next 6 to 8 weeks because that is how long the shipment of the rest of my stuff will take to get to NYC (if I'm lucky). Although I'm quite used to packing for trips, I'm not really sure what I should pack for 8 weeks. Especially since I won't be staying in a hotel, but in my new apartment. Do I take a duvet and sheets? Do I take towels or just buy them new? What about kitchen stuff? And then I haven't really even thought about what clothes to bring. Since it is 1000000 degrees in New York, my (mostly male) friends are telling me to just bring a bikini. I however don't think the people in the office would be ok with that.
I organized some leaving drinks for my mates, both work and friends on Friday. I have a feeling I'm going to cry a lot that night. I really do hate saying goodbye. And the chances of me ever returning to live in England are quite slim, so some of these people, I'll probably never ever will see again... Sucks.

Plea of a Belgian

To the future leader of my home country.

I am a Belgian living abroad. For months and months I have followed the political shenanigans happening in our gorgeous country from a side line. I know I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the discussions about state reform and language politics. What I do know is that I would like my country to still exist in a few years. And for some reason, I have never felt this pessimistic about that prognosis ever.

I don't feel like I'm Flemish (although I suppose I am), I am a Belgian. Ok, my french is not as good as I would like it to be and I have not been to too many Walloon places in my life, but I don't think I would be better off without that part of Belgium. I speak dutch with my family and my friends back home, but speaking that language doesn't mean that I want only Flemish statesmen to decide on laws, legislation etc for me.
My culture is one of "moules et frites", great beer, not so great football, hard work, enjoying the good things in life, being (sometimes a bit falsely) modest, appreciating good food and nice clothes, putting family first, joining a sports team linked to a local cafe,... If I'm not mistaken, that is something I share with all Belgians, not just the Flemish. So I don't want to hear the argument anymore that my language makes my culture. I'm much more like my Walloon neighbor than like my Neighbor in Maastricht on any day!

So many important things are happening in our country and the world today that I beg you to focus on those things first. A crisis in our economy, the problems in Europe with the Irish no, the environmental problems, the Olympics (!)... All this talk about a reform of the state has brought local politics to a place where people don't care anymore. A dangerous place, because then only the radical and extreme voices remain present.

I understand that there are some things that need sorting out in Brussels, but is that really the most important thing right now? If the politics of compromise doesn't work anymore in the extreme Belgian form, why are we talking about giving the regions even more responsibilities? Shouldn't we also look at the alternative? What if we would give the responsibility back to the federal government. No more compromise on everything, no more "a Euro here, then also a Euro there", but a sensible government with as a goal to manage a country and not several regions? I'm sure that our country with its great education, has produced intelligent, smart people in Belgium that could actually rule our nation with the best interest of the whole country in mind. Or is that too much of a Utopia?

Anyway, I hope that when you do take up the challenge of ruling this fine little place, you will keep in mind that there are people out there who care a lot about Belgium. Although some have argued that it's a natural occurrence, that if you look at the history of countries cobbled together by European powers they inevitably break down. Know that it would break my (and hopefully many other) heart(s) to see it go.

Flat

They have started showing my apartment to possible new renters. Sometimes the lady from the agency joins them, sometimes she asks me if I can just let the people in and show them around. Since I absolutely adore my (almost ex-) place, I find it very hard to answer questions like: What is not so good about this place? I just want to scream at them: "Nothing! This is the best place I have ever lived in in my entire life! Quick, get that lease signed, you will be extremely happy here!" But I usually just calmly say that the storage space could be a bit bigger...
I will miss my flat in London a lot. Not only was it a great location (10 minute walk from work, right in the heart of Shoreditch), it just was an amazing flat.
I guess the sad part of leaving a city has begun. And I haven't even started saying goodbye to people yet...

Werchter

Probably my last one, but definitely one to remember. I had a great time at Rock Werchter this year. Highlights for me were: Marc Ronson, Soulwax, Hot Chip, Mika, Ben Folds, Air Traffic and The Hives.

I can't believe that anyone would still book these losers or even pay money to go see them. What an idiot...

The wedding on Saturday was good fun too even though the DJ sucked big time. My cousin's quote: "if you won't start playing some better music, I will smack you in the face", was good for some laughs, but didn't have any impact at all. Luckily we were all determined to have a good time, no mater what. Even kissing those younger ones, right R.?

Moving in 2 weeks... countdown has started.

Meneer T.

Antibodyman-1.drievier Yesterday, I went to see the graduation show of the Royal College of Arts. My very good friend Tuur finished his Master in Design Interactions and I really was excited to see his work. His project "My city = My body" looked at future biological interactions with the city. As he is much better at explaining the ideas behind the projects, check out more information on his site here.

I'm still quite proud that I could offer a tiny bit of help to the London Biotopes part of his work. Capco tap water has never been this valuable :-) But Antibodyman is my favorite! I want a costume like that for the next Halloween.

Congratulations Tuur, you have undoubtedly a bright and very interesting future ahead of you. I will miss you so much when I leave this city. But before that: Les Trois Garcons!

Also kuddos to Revital, Steve and Ivo; I'm so impressed with all of your creativity, brains and hard work.

Radiohead

So good. Summer has officially started now.
